Why Rainy Season Triggers Termite Swarms
Subterranean termites thrive in moist soil. When the long rains arrive in Kenya (typically March–May), soil moisture increases dramatically — ideal conditions for colonies to grow and reproductive termites (alates) to swarm and start new colonies.
Pre-Rainy Season Checklist
Fix Water Leaks and Poor Drainage
Termites are attracted to moisture. Fix leaking pipes, ensure gutters drain away from your foundation, and repair any roof leaks before the rains start.
Remove Wood-to-Soil Contact
Never let wooden posts, beams, or structural timber touch soil directly. Use concrete footings. Stack firewood away from the house and elevated off the ground.
Seal Cracks in Foundation and Walls
Termites can enter through cracks as thin as 1/32nd of an inch. Before the rains, inspect and seal your foundation, walls, and utility entry points with appropriate sealant.
